PTCB Practice Test

You must have a high school diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED) and complete a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program OR have equivalent work experience (at least 500 hours). You must also pass a criminal background check.

The exam covers four knowledge domains:

• Domain 1: Medications (33.5%)
• Domain 2: Federal Requirements (22.5%)
• Domain 3: Patient Safety and Quality Assurance (22.5%)
• Domain 4: Order Entry and Processing (21.5%)

The test consists of 90 multiple-choice questions. Only 80 are scored; the other 10 are unscored pilot questions used for future exams.

You have 1 hour and 50 minutes (110 minutes) to complete the computer-based test.

Once your application is approved, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) email. You then schedule your exam through the Pearson VUE website or phone at one of their professional testing centers.

Your CPhT certification is valid for two years. To renew, you must complete 20 hours of continuing education (including at least 1 hour in pharmacy law and 1 hour in patient safety) and pay the renewal fee.

A combination is best:

• Use a comprehensive PTCB exam prep book
• Take Prephow PTCB practice tests to identify weak areas
• Study flashcards for top 200 drugs and calculations
• Consider a review course

You should be familiar with the top 200 most commonly prescribed drugs, including their brand/generic names, uses, and common side effects. This is a significant portion of the Medications domain.

Requirements vary by state. Most states require certification (PTCB or NHA), and many others require it within a certain time frame after being hired. Certification greatly increases your employability nationwide.

Certification (CPhT) is a national credential you earn by passing the PTCB exam. Licensure/Registration is a state-specific requirement to work. Most states require both: state registration and national certification.
