CCA Practice Test

It's ideal for beginners in medical coding who want to prove foundational skills. If you're transitioning into health information management or need a starting credential before advancing to something like the CCS, this fits. Over 8,000 people have earned it since 2002.

You need a high school diploma or equivalent. AHIMA recommends (but doesn't require) six months of coding experience, an AHIMA-approved coding program, or coursework in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and basic ICD/CPT coding.

Apply online through the AHIMA website. Submit your info, proof of eligibility if needed, and pay the fee. Once approved (usually quick), you'll get an Authorization to Test email from Pearson VUE to schedule at a test center or online.

You need a scaled score of 300 out of 400, which roughly means getting about 70% correct on the scored questions. Results show right away as pass/fail, with your score.

It's good for two years. Renew by earning 20 CEUs (continuing education units) in coding-related topics, then pay a fee. AHIMA tracks it all online.

Start with AHIMA's content outline and Prephow CCA prep guide. Take full mock exams timed at two hours. Review guidelines daily, and join study groups on Reddit or Quizlet for tricky domains like reimbursement.

Entry-level roles like medical coder, billing specialist, or HIM tech in hospitals, clinics, or insurance firms. Average starting pay is $45,000-$55,000, with room to grow to senior coder or auditor positions.
