Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) exam?

The CCS exam is a certification test administered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). It assesses a professional's proficiency in coding inpatient and outpatient medical records. Earning this credential demonstrates expertise in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT coding systems, as well as knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes, and pharmacology.

Who is eligible to take the CCS exam?

While there are no strict educational prerequisites that bar you from testing, AHIMA recommends candidates meet one of the following eligibility pathways before sitting for the exam:

  • Complete courses in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, medical terminology, reimbursement, and coding, PLUS one year of coding experience.
  • Have a minimum of two years of related coding experience.
  • Hold a CCA credential plus one year of experience.
  • Hold a credential from another certifying organization plus one year of experience.
  • Hold an RHIA, RHIT, or CCS-P credential.

What is the format of the CCS exam?

The exam is computer-based and consists of 115 to 140 questions. These include multiple-choice questions and medical scenarios (inpatient and outpatient cases) where you must select the correct codes. The exam duration is 4 hours.

What topics are covered in the CCS exam?

The exam content is divided into five major domains:

  • Coding Knowledge and Skills (39-41%)
  • Coding Documentation (18-22%)
  • Provider Queries (9-11%)
  • Regulatory Compliance (18-22%)
  • Information Technologies (9-11%)

Which code books do I need for the exam?

You must bring specific, approved code books to the testing center. Generally, these include the current year’s editions of:

  • ICD-10-CM (International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification)
  • ICD-10-PCS (International Classification of Diseases, Procedure Coding System)
  • CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) Always check the official AHIMA Candidate Guide for the exact list of permitted books and editions.

How do I apply for the CCS exam?

You must apply through the AHIMA website. Once your application is approved and payment is processed, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter, allowing you to schedule your exam with Pearson VUE.

Does the CCS certification expire?

Yes, the CCS credential is valid for two years. To maintain it, you must earn a specific number of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and pay a recertification fee every two-year cycle.

How many CEUs do I need to maintain my CCS?

Currently, you need 20 CEUs every two-year recertification cycle. A portion of these must be specifically related to coding topics (ICD-10 and CPT).

What is the best way to study for the CCS?

Successful candidates typically use a combination of:

  • An official CCS exam prep book (AHIMA or similar).
  • Online Prephow CSS practice tests to simulate the timed environment.
  • Reviewing the official coding guidelines for the current year.
  • Refreshing knowledge on Anatomy & Physiology and Pharmacology.
