CMA Practice Test

You must complete a medical assisting program that is accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES. Recent graduates, current students close to graduation and past graduates of accredited programs are eligible.

The exam has 200 multiple choice questions. Of these, 180 count toward your score and 20 are unscored pretest items. The questions are split into segments that focus on clinical, administrative and general subjects.

The exam evaluates your understanding of three main areas:

• Clinical skills such as patient examination, vital signs, specimen collection, pharmacology and safety procedures.
• Administrative tasks such as medical records, billing, scheduling, insurance processes and office workflow.
• General topics such as communication, anatomy, ethics, privacy laws and professional behavior.

Yes. The certification is valid for sixty months. You can renew by retaking the exam or by completing the required continuing education credits during the five-year cycle. Continuing education is a common choice because it is flexible and can be completed gradually.

You apply through the AAMA website. After submitting your application, you upload required documents, pay the exam fee, and then wait for authorization to schedule your test.

Most students use the AAMA exam content outline, Prephow CMA practice tests, medical assistant textbooks, and online review courses. Many also use flashcards and timed practice questions.

You can work in medical offices, clinics, urgent care centers, outpatient departments, and specialty practices. Many employers prefer or require the CMA credential.
