The SPHR exam is a certification offered by HRCI. It is intended for senior HR professionals who work at a strategic level. Candidates are expected to focus on planning, policy creation, and aligning HR initiatives with business goals.
You need a minimum of four years of exempt-level (professional) HR experience with a master’s degree or higher, or five years with a bachelor’s degree, or seven years with no degree. The experience must be in a strategic role where you design policies, influence business strategy, and lead HR functions.
The exam has 140 multiple-choice questions (115 scored + 25 pretest). You get 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete it. Questions are scenario-based and test application of knowledge rather than simple recall.
The exam covers five functional areas with the following weightings:
Your certification is good for three years from your test date. To keep it active, you need to earn 60 recertification credits over those three years: 45 HR credits and 15 business credits. If you don't get the credits, you can retake the exam to renew. This ongoing requirement keeps you current with HR trends and strategic business knowledge.
