Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PMP certification, and why is it important?

The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI), is the globally recognized standard for project management expertise. It validates a project manager's competence to lead and direct projects and teams using various approaches, including predictive (waterfall), agile, and hybrid methods. It is highly valued for demonstrating a mastery of essential project leadership skills.

What are the eligibility requirements to take the PMP exam?

To apply for the PMP exam, you must meet specific educational and professional experience requirements set by PMI:

  • Option 1: A four-year degree (bachelor’s or global equivalent), 36 months of experience leading projects, and 35 hours of project management education/training (or a CAPM Certification).
  • Option 2: A high school diploma or an associate’s degree (or global equivalent), 60 months of experience leading projects, and 35 hours of project management education/training.

What is the current format and duration of the PMP exam?

The PMP exam is a single, 230-minute (3 hour and 50 minute) test. It consists of 180 questions, which include multiple-choice, multiple-response, matching, hotspot, and limited fill-in-the-blank questions. The exam includes two 10-minute breaks where you cannot review questions from the preceding section.

Can I qualify for PMP without a college degree?

Yes. If you have a high school diploma or associate’s degree, you just need 60 months (5 years) of project management experience instead of 36 months, plus the same 35 contact hours of training.

How hard is the PMP exam, and what’s the typical pass rate?

It’s challenging but very passable with good preparation. PMI doesn’t publish an official pass rate anymore, but most reputable prep providers report first-time pass rates of 80–95% for students who complete their full course and practice exams. The current exam is heavily scenario-based and tests application, not just memorization.

How do I renew my PMP certification once I pass?

PMP is valid for 3 years. To renew, you must earn 60 PDUs (Professional Development Units) in that period basically 60 hours of learning or giving back to the profession (courses, webinars, teaching, volunteering, etc.). Then you report them online and pay the renewal fee.

What is the best study material or resource to prepare for the PMP?

The most critical resource is the PMI Authorized PMP Exam Content Outline. The most popular reference book is the PMBOK® Guide (7th Edition), along with the Agile Practice Guide. Most successful candidates also use Prephow PMP exam prep course, practice test banks, and study groups.

What content domains are covered on the PMP exam?

The PMP exam content is divided across three main domains, reflecting the modern project manager's work:

  • People (42%): Emphasizes the skills and activities associated with effectively leading a project team.
  • Process (50%): Reinforces the technical aspects of managing a project.
  • Business Environment (8%): Highlights the connection between projects and organizational strategy.

Just passed my PMP on the first try! Prephow's practice tests were a lifesaver. The questions on procurement management, stakeholder management, and risk management felt almost identical to the real exam. Highly recommend.

Passed my PMP today and Prephow deserves most of the credit. The way they explain answers (especially around risk response strategies, organizational theories, and conflict resolution) helped me think like the exam wants. Worth every penny.
