The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse (PMHN) certification is a professional credential offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for registered nurses specializing in mental health care. This certification is ideal for RNs working in psychiatric facilities, mental health clinics, substance abuse treatment centers, or any setting where they provide mental health services to patients across the lifespan.
To be eligible, you must hold a current and active RN license, have at least two years of full-time practice as a registered nurse, and complete a minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical practice in psychiatric–mental health nursing within the past three years. Additionally, 30 hours of continuing education in psychiatric–mental health nursing are required.
The ANCC PMHNP exam blueprint is organized into major domains that assess the knowledge needed for advanced practice across the lifespan. These core content areas include:
The ANCC PMHNP exam typically consists of 175 questions (150 scored and 25 unscored pretest questions) and candidates are given 3.5 hours to complete it. The AANP PMHNP exam typically has 150 questions (135 scored and 15 unscored) with a 3-hour time limit.
You must first meet the eligibility criteria and then submit an application to your chosen certifying body (ANCC or AANP). Once your application is approved, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) which allows you to schedule your exam appointment at a testing center, such as Prometric.

The PMHN certification is valid for 5 years. To renew, you must complete 75 continuing education hours (with at least 51 hours in psychiatric-mental health nursing content) or retake and pass the certification exam. You'll also need to maintain your active RN license and document 1,000 practice hours during the 5-year period.
