AGACNP Practice Test

Two main bodies offer the AGACNP certification in the United States:

• The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
• The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN)

While both are nationally recognized, they have slight differences in focus, eligibility, and exam content. It's crucial to choose the one that aligns with your education and career goals.

While specific requirements can vary, you generally must:

• Hold a current, active RN license.
• Hold a Master's, post-graduate certificate, or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited AGACNP program.
• Have completed a minimum number of supervised clinical practice hours (typically 500+).
• Have completed graduate-level courses in advanced physiology/pathophysiology, advanced health assessment, and advanced pharmacology.

• AACN (ACNPC-AG Exam): Often considered more clinically focused, with an emphasis on the application of knowledge in acute and critical care settings.
• ANCC (AGACNP-BC Exam): Has a broader focus that includes clinical practice but also incorporates more questions on professional roles, policy, and evidence-based practice.

Key domains generally include:

• Clinical Management: Diagnosing and managing acute, complex, and chronic health conditions across organ systems.
• Professional Caring & Ethical Practice: Including ethics, legal issues, patient advocacy, and cultural competence.
• Health Systems & Policy: Healthcare systems, quality improvement, and safety.
• Scientific Foundation: Applying research and evidence-based practice to clinical decision-making.

Both the ANCC and AACN exams are computer-based tests consisting of multiple-choice questions.

• ANCC: Typically around 200 questions, with 150 scored and 50 unscored pretest questions. You have 3.5 hours to complete it.
• AACN: Typically 175 questions (150 scored, 25 unscored) to be completed in 3.5 hours.

• For the ANCC version (AGACNP-BC), the scaled score ranges from 1 to 500, and a score of 350 is the minimum passing score.
• For AACN's ACNPC-AG, the passing score is determined by a subject matter expert panel and may vary based on exam difficulty.

After submitting your application and having eligibility confirmed, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT). Then you can schedule your exam at a testing center via the testing vendor (e.g. Prometric for ANCC) or through the certifying body.

Effective strategies include:

• Using study guides and reference textbooks tailored to AGACNP / acute care content
• Taking AGACNP practice exam from Prephow to simulate test conditions and identify weak areas.
• Reviewing rationales for correct/incorrect options
• Participating in review courses or workshops
• Studying in a structured schedule, focusing especially on high-yield topics like pathophysiology, pharmacology, diagnostics, and clinical management

AGACNP certification is valid for 5 years. To maintain your credential, you must fulfill continuing education requirements and professional development activities through the certifying body's renewal process.
