The MEDSURG-BC (Medical-Surgical Nursing Board Certification) is a credentialing exam for registered nurses who have demonstrated specialized knowledge and experience in medical-surgical nursing. It is offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and signifies a high level of competence and dedication to the specialty.

The MEDSURG-BC is a criterion referenced exam. This means your performance is measured against a set standard, not against other test-takers. You must achieve a scaled score of 350 or higher to pass.
You apply through the ANCC website. Once your application is approved, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) email from the testing provider (PSI). You can then use this ATT to schedule your exam date and location online.
You can recertify through the Continuing Education (CE) pathway by earning a minimum of 1,000 contact hours in medical-surgical nursing practice and 75 CE credits in medical-surgical nursing over the five-year certification period. You must also hold a current, active RN license.
