The Gerontological Nurse Certification Exam is a professional credentialing examination offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) that validates a registered nurse's specialized knowledge and expertise in caring for older adult patients. Passing this exam earns the RN-BC (Registered Nurse-Board Certified) credential in gerontological nursing.
To be eligible, you must hold a current, active RN license in the U.S. or equivalent abroad, have at least 2 years of full-time RN practice, accumulate 2,000 hours of clinical practice in gerontological nursing within the last 3 years, and complete 30 hours of continuing education in gerontological nursing within the last 3 years. International applicants have additional requirements.

You must apply through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) website. After your application is approved, you will receive an authorization-to-test (ATT) email. This allows you to schedule your exam at a convenient Pearson VUE test center location.
Your Gerontological Nurse certification is valid for 5 years. You can renew it by fulfilling continued learning requirements and professional development through the ANCC's Renewal by Continuing Education (CE) process or by retaking the examination.
