The Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN) certification is a professional credential offered by the American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing Certification (ABPANC). It demonstrates expertise in caring for patients recovering from anesthesia in post-anesthesia care units (PACUs) and validates a nurse's specialized knowledge in perianesthesia nursing.
To be eligible for the CPAN exam, you must be a currently licensed registered nurse (RN) and have completed a minimum of 1,800 hours of perianesthesia nursing practice within the past two years, or 2,400 hours within the past three years. This experience must be in Phase I PACU nursing care.
The exam content is based on the Perianesthesia Nursing Role Delineation Study and is categorized into five domains, with a focus on Phase I Postanesthesia care:
The CPAN examination is a computer-based test consisting of 185 multiple-choice questions. Out of these, 140 are scored, and 45 are unscored pretest questions used for future exam development. Candidates are given three hours to complete the exam.
