The CNOR (Certified Perioperative Nurse) is the only accredited certification for perioperative Registered Nurses (RNs). It validates the nurse's clinical expertise in operating room (OR) practices and patient safety. The certification is administered by the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI).
To be eligible, you must hold a current, active RN license and have a minimum of 2 years (or 2,400 hours) of perioperative nursing experience within the past 5 years. This experience must be in the intraoperative setting, working directly in the operating room.
The exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions, of which 185 are scored and 15 are unscored pretest questions. The unscored questions are used for statistical validation and do not affect your final score.

The exam is considered challenging due to its focus on critical thinking and clinical scenarios, with a first-time pass rate around 70%. You apply through the credentialing body, CCI (Competency & Credentialing Institute). The process involves submitting an application online via your CCI account, meeting the eligibility requirements, and paying the fee. Once your application is approved, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) email, which allows you to schedule your exam at a convenient Pearson VUE test center.
Effective preparation includes reviewing the CCI CNOR Exam Handbook, using study guides and practice tests, attending review courses, forming study groups with colleagues, and focusing on the exam content outline. Most candidates recommend studying for 2-3 months before the exam.
The CNOR exam is offered as a computer-based test at Pearson VUE testing centers throughout the United States and internationally. You must schedule an appointment and take the exam at an approved testing location.
