Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CGRN certification?

The CGRN (Certified Gastroenterology Registered Nurse) is a voluntary specialty certification offered by the ABCGN that recognizes registered nurses' expertise in gastroenterology and endoscopy nursing. It demonstrates advanced knowledge in GI procedures, patient care, and safety standards, enhancing professional credibility and often influencing career advancement.

What is the format and content of the CGRN exam?

The CGRN exam is a computer-based test consisting of 175 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 150 are scored, and 25 are unscored pretest questions. The content is divided into three main domains:

  • Domain 1: Gastroenterology (43%) - Focuses on the nursing care of patients with GI, pancreatic, biliary, and liver diseases.
  • Domain 2: Endoscopy (43%) - Covers the endoscopy procedure process, including pre-procedure, intra-procedure, and post-procedure care.
  • Domain 3: Professional Practice (14%) - Addresses topics like patient education, professionalism, legal/ethical issues, and quality improvement.

What are the eligibility requirements to sit for the CGRN exam?

To qualify for the CGRN exam, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the United States.
  • Have at least two years of full-time experience (or 4,000 hours part-time equivalent) in gastroenterology/endoscopy nursing within the past five years.
  • Experience must be in a clinical, supervisory, administrative, teaching/education, or research capacity in an institutional or private practice setting.

How long do I have to complete the CGRN exam?

You will have 3-4 hours to complete the CGRN exam. The exam is computer-based and administered at designated Prometric testing centers, allowing you to work through the questions at your own pace within the allotted time.

When and where is the CGRN exam offered?

The computer-administered exam is offered twice per year during two established testing windows, typically in the spring (May) and the fall (October). The exam is taken at various Prometric testing centers across the U.S. and Canada.

How long is the CGRN certification valid, and how do I renew it?

The CGRN certification is valid for a period of five (5) years. To maintain the credential, nurses must renew by the expiration date through one of two methods:

  • Re-examination: Retaking and passing the CGRN exam.
  • Continuing Education: Completing a specified number of continuing education hours (often 75–100 contact hours) related to the specialty.
