The Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) exam is a certification test from AHIMA for professionals managing health information systems, data privacy, and compliance in healthcare settings. It's ideal if you have a bachelor's degree in health information management or a related field and want roles in administration, data analysis, or leadership in hospitals, clinics, or consulting.
Typically you must complete a baccalaureate-level program (or higher) in Health Information Management (HIM) accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), or meet other equivalent criteria (such as certain foreign credentials or the RHIT credential under specific provisos).
The RHIA exam is based on a detailed exam blueprint that covers the following domains:
The RHIA exam is a computer-based test consisting of 180 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 150 are scored, and 30 are pretest questions that are not scored. You will have 4 hours to complete the exam.
You apply through your AHIMA account on their website. Once your application is approved, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) email from AHIMA's testing partner, PSI. This ATT allows you to schedule your exam at a PSI testing center or through their online proctoring service.
Start with AHIMA official exam content outline and their study guide. Use Prephow RHIA Practice Questions, flashcards, and review courses. Many people join study groups or use online platforms with mock exams to build confidence in timed conditions.
With RHIA certification you are positioned for leadership roles in health information management: overseeing health record documentation, compliance/privacy programs, data analytics, information governance, and working in hospitals, health systems, consulting, and other settings where health information management is key.
If you do not pass, you can retake the exam. AHIMA allows a maximum of four attempts within a one-year eligibility period. There is a waiting period of 30 days between the first and second attempt, and 90 days between the second and third, and third and fourth attempts. Each retake requires a new application and payment of the exam fee.

I spent hours on their Information Governance and Data Security sections. The practice questions on data integrity, master patient indexes, and risk assessment covered every angle. Felt fully prepared walking into the testing center.
