The Certified Club Manager (CCM) certification is a professional credential offered by the Club Management Association of America (CMAA) that recognizes expertise in private club management. This certification demonstrates a manager's comprehensive knowledge of club operations, leadership capabilities, and commitment to professional excellence. It's highly valued in the industry and often preferred or required by top-tier private clubs when hiring senior management positions.
To be eligible, candidates must be current members of the CMAA and have completed the required education credits through the Business Management Institute (BMI) programs. Additionally, candidates must have a minimum of six years of club management experience before sitting for the exam.
The process begins with the completion and submission of a Certification Petition form to the CMAA National Office, along with a non-refundable administrative fee (typically around $100). The CMAA then reviews the petition and the candidate’s credit history to ensure all eligibility requirements have been met. Once approved, the candidate is authorized to pay the exam fee and schedule the test.
The exam is structured around the unique skills and knowledge needed for comprehensive club management, covering ten main areas:
The CCM exam is a computer-based test consisting of 400 multiple-choice questions covering ten core competency areas of club management. Candidates must achieve an overall score of 70% or higher and a minimum of 50% in each of the ten parts to pass.
Preparation typically involves completing the CMAA’s BMI programs, reviewing the Club Management Handbook, studying CMAA reference materials, and taking online Prephow CCM practice tests to strengthen understanding of each competency area.
The CCM designation must be renewed every five years. Recertification requires ongoing professional development, continuing education credits, and active involvement in the CMAA to ensure that managers stay current with industry trends.
