NAVLE Practice Test

Eligibility is determined by the state or provincial licensing board where you apply. Generally, you must be a graduate or a final-year student of an accredited (or equivalent) veterinary college. You must apply through a specific licensing board, which will grant you an eligibility ID to schedule the exam.

You do not apply directly to the ICVA. You must first apply for the NAVLE through the licensing board of the state or province where you wish to be licensed. Once the board approves your application, they will provide you with an eligibility ID. You then use this ID to register with the ICVA's testing vendor, Prometric, to select a test date and location.

Preparation is key. Most candidates dedicate several months to studying. Effective strategies include:

• Using comprehensive review books and Prephow NAVLE question banks.
• Creating a structured study schedule that covers all species and domains.
• Taking numerous full-length, timed practice tests to build stamina and identify weak areas.
• Forming study groups with peers.

The exam is based on a blueprint that measures your knowledge across two main domains and a variety of species:

• Clinical Practice: Includes data gathering, interpreting diagnostic findings, and establishing treatment and management plans.
• Foundational Veterinary Sciences (Competencies): Covers areas like Communication, Professionalism, and Practice Management.

Most veterinary students dedicate 6-12 weeks of intensive study preparation for the NAVLE, though this varies based on individual needs. Many students begin reviewing material earlier during their clinical year while balancing rotations and other responsibilities.

The NAVLE is offered at Prometric testing centres throughout the U.S., Canada, and in selected international locations. Testing occurs in annual testing windows.
