Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NAPLEX exam and why do I need to take it?

The NAPLEX (North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination) is a standardized exam that assesses a candidate's knowledge and ability to practice pharmacy safely and effectively. It's required for pharmacy licensure in all 50 US states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam. You must pass this exam to become a licensed pharmacist in North America.

Who is eligible to take the NAPLEX?

Eligibility typically requires graduation from an ACPE-accredited Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program and approval from the state board of pharmacy where licensure is sought.

How long is the NAPLEX exam and what is the format?

The NAPLEX is a 6-hour computer-based exam consisting of 250 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 200 questions are scored while 50 are pretest questions that don't count toward your score. The exam is divided into two sections with an optional 10-minute break between them.

What are the main competency areas covered by the exam?

The NAPLEX blueprint focuses on three main competency areas, with varying weights:

  • Obtain, Interpret, or Assess Data, Medical, or Patient Information (18%)
  • Identify Drug Characteristics (14%)
  • Develop or Manage Treatment Plans (35%)
  • Perform Calculations (14%)
  • Compound, Dispense, or Administer Drugs, or Manage Delivery Systems (11%)
  • Regulatory Requirements and Patient Safety (8%)

How do I register for the NAPLEX exam?

To register, you must first apply for licensure with your state board of pharmacy. Once approved, you'll receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) from NABP. You then schedule your exam appointment with Pearson VUE testing centers. The entire process can take several weeks, so plan accordingly.

How should I prepare for the NAPLEX?

Most candidates dedicate several weeks to months of focused study. Successful preparation typically involves:

  • Using a comprehensive review book.
  • Taking Prephow NAPLEX practice questions and full-length practice exams.
  • Focusing heavily on areas like calculations, oncology, infectious diseases, and cardiology.
  • Creating a structured study schedule and forming study groups.

Is the NAPLEX the only requirement to become a licensed pharmacist?

No. In addition to passing the NAPLEX, all states require you to pass the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE). The MPJE tests your knowledge of federal and state-specific pharmacy law. Some states may also have additional requirements, such as a practical internship exam or a background check.

I was nervous about the calculations section, but Prephow's practice exams nailed things like CrCl and dose adjustments. They also covered infectious diseases and antibiotic selection really well. Bought their tests, studied hard, and passed the NAPLEX easily.

Great value from Prephow – their practice questions mirrored the NAPLEX focus on drug interactions and biostatistics. I felt prepared for the compounding and dispensing parts too. Studied with them and passed on the first attempt.
