PARCC Practice Test

The PARCC assessment measures student proficiency in two main subject areas:

• English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA)
• Mathematics

These assessments are typically administered to students in grades 3 through 8 and also to high school students enrolled in specific courses like Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, or their integrated equivalents.

The PARCC assessment is composed of two main components, administered at different times during the school year:

• Performance-Based Assessment (PBA): Administered earlier in the year, this component focuses on complex reasoning, mathematical modeling, and extended writing tasks, often requiring students to analyze texts and provide evidence.
• End-of-Year (EOY) Assessment: Administered later in the year, this component focuses on demonstrating a solid understanding of concepts and mathematical fluency, often through multiple-choice and short-answer questions.

Student scores are reported across five performance levels, with a scale score ranging from 650 to 850. These levels describe how well a student met grade-level expectations:

• Level 5: Exceeded Expectations
• Level 4: Met Expectations (Indicates readiness for the next level)
• Level 3: Approached Expectations
• Level 2: Partially Met Expectations
• Level 1: Did Not Yet Meet Expectations Levels 4 and 5 indicate a student is performing well and on track for college and career readiness.

The Prephow provides practice tests and sample questions that allow students, families, and educators to experience the computer-based format, item types, and technology features. The best preparation is strong classroom instruction throughout the year. Students should also practice typing skills, familiarize themselves with the computer interface, and work on critical thinking and problem-solving rather than memorization.

Students take state assessments in ELA and mathematics online each spring. The typical testing window runs from April through May, though each school sets its own specific testing schedule. Students don't test every day during this period.

Policies regarding opting out vary by state and school district. Some states have laws that allow parents to opt their children out of standardized testing for various reasons, while others do not. It is crucial to check the specific regulations with your local school district and state education agency.

PARCC is considered a "next-generation" assessment. Unlike traditional multiple-choice tests, it emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and writing skills. The test includes complex, multi-step questions, essays requiring textual evidence, and math problems that ask students to explain their reasoning.

It varies by state, but in many, a passing score in ELA and math counts toward graduation starting with the class of 2019 or later. Earlier classes could use alternatives like SAT scores. Always confirm with your district.
