Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam)?

The ISEE is a standardized admissions test used by many independent (private) schools to assess the academic abilities of students applying for admission. It measures a student's quantitative and verbal reasoning skills, reading comprehension, and mathematics achievement.

What are the different levels of the ISEE, and which one should my child take?

The ISEE is administered at four main levels, based on the grade the student is currently applying for:

  • Primary Level: Applicants for Grades 2–4.
  • Lower Level: Applicants for Grades 5–6.
  • Middle Level: Applicants for Grades 7–8.
  • Upper Level: Applicants for Grades 9–12.

Students must take the level corresponding to the grade they are applying to enter.

What sections are on the ISEE, and how is the exam structured?

The ISEE exam consists of five sections (four scored, one unscored):

  • Verbal Reasoning (Synonyms and Sentence Completion)
  • Quantitative Reasoning (Math problems and Quantitative Comparisons)
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Mathematics Achievement
  • Essay (Unscored, but sent to schools)

How do I register for the ISEE?

Registration is straightforward head to the ISEE by ERB to set up an account and book a spot. You can also do it by phone ((800) 446-0320) or mail. Plan ahead, as spots fill up, and you can send scores to up to six schools for free during signup.

How is the ISEE scored?

A raw score is calculated for each section based on correct answers, then converted into a scaled score ranging from 760 to 940. Students are assigned a percentile rank from 1 to 99, which indicates how they performed compared to other students who took the test in the past three years. These percentiles are then grouped into 9 ranges called stanines, with the lowest score being a 1 and the highest a 9.

Where and how is the test administered?

The ISEE is flexible. It can be taken:

  • Online from home
  • On a computer at a Prometric test center
  • On paper at a school testing site

How should I prepare for the ISEE?

Start 2-3 months out with official practice tests from Prephow to get the format down. Focus on weak spots like verbal or quant, and do full timed runs to handle the length. Tutoring or apps like Test Innovators can help, especially for fee-waiver families who get free access.

I bought the ISEE practice pack from Prephow and it was a game changer. The verbal reasoning section with all those synonym and sentence completion drills felt exactly like the real Upper Level exam. My score jumped 12 points and I got into my first choice school.

I was stressed about the ISEE essay, but Prephow gave tons of real prompts and sample responses. My final essay on test day was solid because I practiced exactly what showed up. Got accepted to three schools!
