The L3 certification proves you can diagnose and repair hybrid and electric vehicles. It tests your knowledge of battery systems, high voltage safety, and vehicle electronics. This certification is important for technicians working on modern hybrid cars and electric SUVs.
You must first pass two other ASE tests before taking the L3. These are the A6 Electrical Systems test and the A8 Engine Performance test. You also need at least three years of work experience in automotive repair.
The exam contains 55 total questions. However, only 45 questions count toward your final score. The other 10 questions are for research purposes. You should answer all questions since you will not know which ones are unscored.
The exam covers five main topics:
The L3 is considered a challenging test because it covers advanced topics. You need solid understanding of hybrid systems and high voltage safety. Many people find it difficult because it requires both theoretical knowledge and practical diagnostic experience.
You need three years of relevant automotive repair experience. You can substitute some experience with formal education from a technical school. For example, completing an automotive degree program may count for one or two years of required experience.
Your L3 certification remains valid for five years. After five years, you must pass a recertification test to keep your credential active. The recertification test has fewer questions than the original exam but covers the same topics.
Prephow offers ASE L3 practice questions with detailed explanations for each answer. You can use Study Mode to learn or Exam Mode to simulate the real test. The platform tracks your progress and shows which topics need more work.
