CWS Practice Test

The CWS credential is granted by the American Board of Wound Management (ABWM), an independent, non-profit organization. The ABWM is responsible for developing the exam, setting eligibility standards, and maintaining certification.

Candidates must be a currently licensed healthcare professional with a full and unrestricted license in at least one state, and in all states where they currently practice. Eligible professions include, but are not limited to, MDs, DOs, DPMs, NPs, PAs, PTs, OTs, RDs, and RNs.

The exam content is organised into five major domains:

• Wound Healing Environment (e.g., anatomy/physiology, phases of wound healing)
• Assessment and Diagnosis (history, exam, labs/imaging, nutrition, risk-assessment)
• Patient Management (debridement, dressings, advanced therapies, negative-pressure wound therapy, etc.)
• Etiological Considerations (diabetes, venous insufficiency, pressure wounds, burns, etc.)
• Professional Issues (ethics, documentation, reimbursement, team-based care)

You must apply through the American Board of Wound Management (ABWM) website. The process involves submitting an online application, providing documentation of your license and experience, and paying the application fee. Once your application is approved, you will receive an authorization to schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE testing center.

Successful candidates often use a combination of study methods, including:

• Official Resources: The ABWM provides a detailed content outline and recommended reading list.
• Review Courses: Many organizations offer in-person and online CWS exam prep courses.
• Textbooks: Core wound care textbooks are essential for foundational knowledge.
• Practice Tests: Taking Prephow CWS practice questions and simulated exams helps build stamina and identify weak areas.

The CWS exam is widely considered a rigorous and challenging certification. Historical data suggests the first-time pass rate for the exam is around 60%, reflecting its comprehensive nature and the high standard of knowledge required.

To maintain the credential annually, you must complete 6 hours of wound management continuing education (CE) per year and pay an annual renewal fee (currently around $175). For recertification after 10 years, you are required to retake and pass the CWS exam.
