Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assessment, and why is it required?

The TSI Assessment is a state-mandated program in Texas designed to determine if a student is ready for college-level coursework in the general areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. All incoming students enrolling at a public college or university in Texas must take the TSI Assessment unless they qualify for an exemption. The results are used by advisors to place students into the appropriate courses.

Who is exempt from taking the TSI Assessment?

Many students can be exempt based on previous standardized test scores or college experience. Common exemptions include:

  • SAT Scores: A minimum score of 480 on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) section and a minimum of 530 on the Math section.
  • ACT Scores: A combined score of 40 on the English and Reading (E+R) tests, and a score of 22 on the Math test.
  • Prior College Credit: Students who have already earned an associate's or bachelor's degree, or who have satisfactorily completed college-level coursework in an area of the TSI.
  • Military Service: Active-duty service members and veterans may also be exempt.

What sections are included on the TSI Assessment 2.0 (TSIA2)?

The TSIA2 consists of two main sections:

  • Mathematics (Math): Assesses college readiness in quantitative reasoning, algebraic reasoning, geometric and spatial reasoning, and functional relationships.
  • English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR): An integrated assessment covering reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and revision/editing skills.
  • WritePlacer Essay: Required if a student scores below the college-ready benchmark on the ELAR section's multiple-choice portion.

What is the Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA), and do I have to complete it?

Yes, completing the Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA) is mandatory for all students before they can take the TSI Assessment. The PAA provides:

  • An explanation of the importance of the TSI Assessment.
  • Practice test questions and feedback.
  • Information on developmental education options.
  • You must receive a certificate of completion from your college before you can be issued a testing voucher.

Can I study or prepare for the TSI?

Absolutely, it's not just a pop quiz. Free resources on the ACCUPLACER include practice tests, sample questions, and Prephow TSI study guides tailored to TSI. Focus on high school-level skills in algebra, reading comprehension, and essay writing to feel confident.

How long are my TSI scores valid?

TSI assessment results can be used up to five years from date of testing. This means if you take the test now and transfer to another Texas public college within five years, your scores will still be valid.

What is the Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA)?

Before you take the TSIA2 Assessment, you must participate in a Pre-Assessment Activity, which takes approximately 30 minutes and helps you learn what's on the assessment, try sample items, and receive your certificate for completing this mandatory activity. You can't test without completing it first.

Is the TSI Assessment timed?

No, the TSI Assessment is not a timed test. Students are encouraged to take their time and fully complete each section. The average time to complete all three sections (Math, ELAR, and Essay) is generally between three to five hours.
