Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PSAT, and why should high school students take it?

The PSAT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a practice version of the SAT designed for 10th and 11th graders. It helps build test-taking skills, provides a benchmark for SAT prep, and qualifies top scorers for National Merit Scholarships—making it a low-stakes way to get ahead in college planning.

Who is eligible to take the PSAT?

Most schools offer the PSAT to 10th and 11th graders, but it's open to any high school student, including 9th graders in some cases (though they're not eligible for scholarships). Homeschooled students can register through participating schools.

How do I register for the PSAT?

Registration happens through your school, not directly with College Board. Talk to your counselor early in the fall; no separate fee payment is needed upfront, and you'll fill out a simple form on test day. Create a free College Board account in advance to link your scores.

How is the PSAT scored?

Scores range from 320 to 1520. Each section (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math) is scored between 160 and 760.

How long is the PSAT?

The test takes 2 hours and 45 minutes in total. The breakdown is:

  • Reading: 60 minutes
  • Writing and Language: 35 minutes
  • Math (No Calculator): 25 minutes
  • Math (Calculator): 45 minutes

What subjects and content areas are tested on the exam?

The PSAT/NMSQT covers the following main content areas:

  • Reading and Writing: Measures comprehension, analysis of text (literature, history/social studies, and science), vocabulary (Words in Context), and mastery of grammar and Standard English Conventions.
  • Math: Assesses your skills in four main domains: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry.

How should I prepare for the PSAT?

The best preparation is to take challenging courses in school. For focused practice, use official materials from the College Board, including full-length practice tests on Prephow. Reviewing fundamental math, grammar, and reading comprehension skills is also highly effective.

Do colleges see or care about my PSAT scores?

PSAT scores are not sent to colleges and do not directly impact your college admissions chances. They are used for self-assessment, test preparation, and National Merit qualification. However, achieving National Merit Commended or Semifinalist status is a highly regarded honor that you can and should report on your college applications.

Got the PSAT practice pack from Prephow and I'm so glad I did. The math sections on quadratic functions, passports to advanced math, and those tricky data interpretation questions were spot on.

Honestly thought PSAT math would kill me, but Prephow's heart of algebra and problem-solving sections prepared me better than my school ever did. Even the no-calculator questions felt familiar.
