STSC Practice Test

To be eligible, candidates must meet the training and experience requirements. You must have completed 30 hours of formal safety, health, and environmental training (from a single or multiple courses) AND meet at least one of the following experience criteria:

• Two (2) years of supervisory experience.
• Four (4) years of construction-related work experience.
• An associate degree or higher in occupational safety, construction management, or risk management.
• Completion of a two-year union or trade training program/apprenticeship.

The STSC exam is a computer delivered, multiple-choice test. It consists of 100 questions that must be completed within a 2-hour time limit. The exam is closed book.

The BCSP STSC exam is divided into five primary content domains, testing both knowledge and skills:

• Safety Program Implementation and Management
• Hazard Identification and Control
• Health Hazards and Basic Industrial Hygiene
• Emergency Preparedness and Management
• Leadership and Ethics

The STSC certification is administered by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), which is an internationally recognized organization that certifies safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) practitioners.

The STSC certification is valid for a period of five years. To maintain the certification, you must pay an annual renewal fee and meet recertification requirements every five years, which typically involves demonstrating continued professional development and completing additional safety and health training.

The STSC certification enhances a supervisor's professional credibility and demonstrates a verified knowledge of key construction safety principles. It improves skills in risk management, accident prevention, regulatory compliance, and safety leadership, which ultimately helps reduce incidents and liabilities on the job site.

Preparation time is highly individual and depends on your current level of construction safety experience and your study habits. However, most successful candidates dedicate anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks of focused preparation. A good strategy is to:

• Create a study schedule that allocates time for each domain listed in the blueprint.
• Focus on weak areas identified during initial practice tests.
• Aim for consistent, active study (e.g., 5-10 hours per week) rather than last-minute cramming.
