RBT Practice Test

Before you can take the exam, you need to complete a 40-hour training course that covers the RBT Task List, pass a criminal background check, and be at least 18 years old. You'll also need to have a BCBA supervisor who will oversee your competency assessment. The good news is you don't need a college degree to pursue RBT certification.

The exam contains 85 multiple-choice questions, but only 75 of them are scored. The remaining 10 are pilot questions being tested for future exams. You'll have 90 minutes to complete the test, which most people find is enough time if you've prepared adequately.

The exam tests six main content areas:

• Measurement
• Assessment
• Skill acquisition
• Behavior reduction
• Documentation and reporting
• Professional conduct and scope of practice

Questions are based on the RBT Task List, which outlines specific skills and knowledge areas you need to master.

You need to answer at least 63 out of the 75 scored questions correctly, which translates to about 84%. The passing threshold is relatively high because RBTs work directly with vulnerable populations, so a strong understanding of the material is necessary.

The exam is administered online through Pearson VUE testing centers or as a remotely proctored exam from your home or office. Remote testing gives you more flexibility in scheduling, but you'll need a computer with a webcam and a quiet, private space that meets the technical requirements.

Your RBT certification is valid for one year. To renew it, you'll need to complete 20 hours of continuing education and maintain ongoing supervision by a BCBA. You'll also need to pay an annual renewal fee and ensure your competency assessment stays current.

If time expires before you complete all questions, any unanswered questions will be marked as incorrect. That's why time management is important. Most test-takers find 90 minutes sufficient, but it helps to practice answering questions efficiently during your study sessions so you don't feel rushed on exam day.
